Fifteen of us joined Jill today at Wainoni carpark in Greenhithe on another fantastic blue-sky morning. This walk is a mix of pathways, passing palatial homes with their huge, manicured grounds, down alleyways, a bit of coastal walking, bush & of course scenic views. Sadly, part of Jill's intended route was closed off to us today due to repair work.
We headed off to Kingfisher Esplanade where part of this track is closed off but we were able to enjoy views thru the trees of Lucas Creek. After passing through several reserves & quiet roadways we followed a track down onto the mudflats & scrambled a short way around to end up at the Greenhithe Wharf where we had morning tea. Despite the tide being out still a great vista on a beautiful sunny morning. See flash boats moored nearby.
Then up a bit of a hill, we passed a beautiful stand of kauri together on a corner of a property plus huge agave flowers (see pics). We came around to Rahui Beach Reserve & more clear views here this time of Herald Island Upper Harbour. Then we zig zagged our way up steps followed by a local cat who decided joining in on a WOPs walk was a good idea. Apparently, he or she is a well-known local in the area & actually lives in Marae Rd. We might have a new recruit or mascot here!! We were accompanied all the way to the Marae Reserve lookout with superb vistas of Hobsonville Pt. See the cat sneaking thru the fence on the lookout obviously knows its way around, perhaps trying to get down to the cormorants below. Thank you, Jill, for some of the cat pics.
We then headed down onto Remu Pl track, out onto Tauhinu Rd & down Shiloh Way to join the back end of Collins Park where we had lunch. After this another short road walk & we entered Wainoni Park South following a wide gravel path & boardwalk which is called Joe Clark Walk. There is a sign giving Joe's history. He was a local soldier who served in WW1. We continued on, this time into a bush reserve & eventually looped back & before we knew it, we were back to where we started from this morning.
Thanks, Jill, for an interesting walk around the byways of Greenhithe, lots of hidden gems here. A perfect day weather-wise & thanks to everyone for their company today.
