TRIP SNIP: Mt Donald McLean/Puriri Ridge/Omanawanui, Thursday 11 August 2022

Our journey around the harbour edge to the start of our walk was a treat in itself, with views of the Manukau Heads and a glassy calm harbour. Eighteen keen WOPs walkers set off from the Mt Donald McLean Road carpark with Elizabeth as our leader. There had been a last-minute change of walk due to the Gibbons-Whatipu track being closed while a helicopter was ferrying film equipment in the area.

We climbed up to Mt Donald McLean lookout and enjoyed stunning views of the Manukau Harbour in brilliant sunshine. We returned to our start point and then commenced the Puriri Ridge Track which became the Omanawanui Track. The tracks led us along ridges on beautifully upgraded paths with many boardwalks and lots of steps through gorgeous bush full of kauri trees, nikau and tree ferns. At one stage we were helped by chains up a steep rocky bank.

There were wonderful views along the way with our lunch stop overlooking the harbour entrance and Whatipu. After lunch we returned the same way although there seemed to be more steps on the return trip! It was a very enjoyable day - thank you, Elizabeth.
