A whopping number of 34 WOPpers, including two newcomers (the lovely Div and myself) showed up at the Stanmore Bay Boating Club Carpark to join our leader Elizabeth for an adventure walk from coast to coast on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. Two other WOPs leaders, Jill and Kirsten, were part of the group, so we were looked after professionally and felt safe enough to start the journey. The weather played its part, it was sunny and warm, albeit every now and again a chilly breeze, a tiny reminder that spring has not yet sprung.
The hike started at Stanmore Bay Beach with an easy walk over to Manly Beach and fantastic views over the coastline. Morning tea was at a reserve in Manly. After the refreshment it was over the top of the peninsula towards Arkles Bay. We walked through bush reserves and suburban streets, quite easy relaxed strolling, and fine opportunities for the newbies to chat to some experienced WOPpers. Just in time for lunch we reached the entrance of the Weiti River. The beautiful boating club, which is located further up the river, was the perfect destination for our picnic lunch.
After the rest, it was uphill through the bush to Wade River Road, and into Scott Road, which took us to the middle of Whangaparaoa. At the top, we had marvellous views of the ocean and could also see the Mahurangi inlet. On we went, again partly through bush tracks, partly through suburban roads and finally we crossed the main Whangaparaoa Road, to the Stanmore Bay side again. We passed through Arden’s Park, and finally reached Stanmore Beach again. While the Weiti River side was calm and warm, it was rather windy here. Soft sand, rocks and gentle waves accompanied us on the way back. It was quite a long walk along the beach, and we had to pay attention not to slip around the rocks. So, not a lot of talk during that bit. It was pleasant to see the kids playing at the beach and a courageous elderly gentleman dipping his toes into the cold water.
Back at the parking spot, we figured out that we had completed between 15 and 18 km on our adventure hike. YAY. Thank you very much, Elizabeth, for a beautiful walk, and also thanks to Jill, one of the most patient tailgaters. Looking forward to a lot more trips.
