Ten enthusiastic WOPpers met Elizabeth at Sandspit Wharf and travelled by ferry to Mansion House Bay on Kawau Island. As we passed along Kawau’s coast, we could see houses sparsely dotted on the bush-covered island. After arriving at the house, we briefly enjoyed the English garden surrounding the house before heading up the hill and above the coast. Walking was a delight as we followed well-worn tracks through bushy areas with awesome views of the sea below and the mainland in the distance.
The weather was kind to us despite some fairly strong gusts threatening to blow our hats off. It was a leisurely pace to a long disused copper mine down on the water’s edge. A bit of a scramble along the stones and rocks and then back to the track for a quick snack. With perfect timing we arrived back at Mansion House to catch the ferry. There we were entertained by a magnificent peacock.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for leading us out to an offshore island. It was a refreshing experience.
