TRIP SNIP: Cutty Grass & Spragg Bush, Thursday 28 March 2024

There was no chance of getting lost in the morning showers: three leaders accompanied four WOPpers out and back along Cutty Grass Track, stopping off at the Alpine Sports Club hut for an early morning tea and continuing on to the McElwain Lookout for a misty view of Piha Valley. Lunch was enjoyed on the Auckland Tramping Club's deck. Our official leader Div was led astray on her mission to find the club toilet, of which we can confirm there are two, apparently identical, at either end of the hut.

We then took a short drive to Spragg Bush, gifted by conservationist Wesley Spragg in 1924 and added to by the Waitakere Ranges Protection Society in 2004. This magnificent remnant bush has some enormous kauri, rimu, rata, Hall's totara and kiekie jungle. We did an anti-clockwise circuit, exiting onto Turanga Road and back onto the track from the road end. Thanks, Div, for an enjoyable day.
