TRIP SNIP: Karamatura/Mt Donald McLean, Thursday 12 November 2020.

It was only in September that tracks in the Karamatura Valley were re-opened so this was the first official WOPs walk there in quite some time. Eight of us set of in what proved to be ideal walking weather.

The path initially follows the route of the old tramline alongside the Karamatura Stream. Our WOPs programme said “There will be steps” – not wrong!  These were quite challenging (as apparently were the re-building of the track and installation of the stairs due to the steep gradient of the hillside).

However, our efforts were totally rewarded. After the recent rain the bush looked and felt very fresh and green.  It was great to see kauri, albeit at a distance and lots of very pretty rimu. Karamatura Falls looked stunning. On the summit of Mt Donald McLean we could see the Manukau Heads, Whatipu and the Tasman Sea from one lookout and right up the Manukau Harbour from the other – magic!

It’s worth noting that the carpark at the beginning of the walk has been upgraded and a new toilet block built. Take time to look at the carving and read the story of the two lovers, their connection to the waterfall and the meaning and significance of the name Karamatura.

Thanks, Kay, for a most enjoyable day.
